F.A.Women's Cup - Road to the Final
Colne Valley's excellent Cup run continued with a 4-1 win against Bracknell Town. Debbie Watson bagged a hat-trick and Charmaine Benham added the other goal for the Greater London League side who now have the chance to try and claim a third Southern Region League scalp against Maidenhead Utd this Sunday.
Maidenhead United Ladies were formed in 2008, using a nucleus of players from what had been Burnham Ladies. Having attracted both a new manager and a number of new players pre-season, Maidenhead won promotions from Southern Region Division One at the first attempt as well as reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing 1-0 to Swindon Town.
Maidenhead's first season in the Premier Division was also successful as with the help of a few new players they came runners up in both the League and League Cup, unfortunately losing in the First Round Qualifying of the FA Cup. The first trophy came in 2010-11 when they won the Chairman's Cup. They finished sixth in the league and were knocked out in the Third Round Qualifying in the FA Cup. Last season the girls finished fifth in the League and didn't unfortunately experience any success in Cup competitions, losing in the Second Round Qualifying of the FA Cup.
After a good pre-season and the recruitment of a few new faces, Maidenhead have kicked off the 12-13 season in good form and have won three of their six league games.
First Team manager is Michael Stevens with Aaron O'Brian as Coach, while the team is captained by Natalie Barette. A special mention should go to John Urry who is a consistent help on match days, acting as first aider and physio, as well as Lisa Starling who deals with the admin and day to day running of both the first and reserve teams.
There are a number of core players all making the same number of appearances this season, these being captain Natalie Barette, Tina Brett, Louise Ekins and goalkeeper Ellie Parker. As with appearances there are a number of players contributing to goals with Verity Snow, Tina Brett, Alex Dover, Zoe Clifford and Louise Ekins all scoring regularly.
Maidenhead United will host the tie on Sunday and the home side will start as favourites, although Colne Valley have an excellent record against teams from their league this season and are capable of another upset.
