Sunderland went four points clear at the top of the National Division with a 4-1 victory over Charlton Athletic.
Beth Mead opened the scoring for the Wearsiders on the half hour and Natalie Gutteridge headed in the second early in the second half. Charlton passed up an opportunity to reduce the arrears when Gemma Shepherd's penalty was saved by Rachael Laws and three minutes later, Keira Ramshaw put Sunderland further in front. Kit Graham did pull a goal back for the Addicks but Sophie Williams rounded off the win for the home side with the fourth late on.
Sunderland's position at the top was further strengthened by the news that second placed Leeds Utd went down to a 3-0 defeat away to Manchester City. An unfortunate own goal from Hayley Sharp put City ahead on seven minutes and on the hour, Danni Young fired home the second. Sarah Danby wrapped up the points against her old side with a superbly struck 25-yard shot, to give City a win which takes them into the top half.
Aston Villa picked up their fourth win in a row in the league and are up into third place following their 2-0 success at Barnet. The first half ended goalless but Villa took the lead eight minutes after the restart through Dani Petrovic and Katie Wilkinson secured victory for her side shortly afterwards from the penalty spot.
Coventry City came from behind to win 2-1 against Cardiff City Ladies and lift themselves into fourth. Ellie Smith had given Cardiff a first half lead which was cancelled out just before the break by Dani Saulter and in the dying minutes, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk struck to give new Sky Blues manager Chris Holloway a winning start.
