Sussex 6 The Army 3
Sussex made the ideal start to their Southern Counties Cup campaign with a 6-3 victory over The Army at a windy and damp Lancing on Thursday.
Three goals in each half saw off the Cup holders who competed well but were unable to handle the dynamic attacking power of the home team.
Chichester City's prolific Abbey Shrubb got Sussex off on the right foot with two goals inside the first twenty minutes, on both occasions outpacing the defence and finishing neatly. Before these strikes, Army's Bianca Ross had hit the bar from Kayleigh Oliver's cut back.
The Army were well in the game and reduced the deficit when Krissy Wright lobbed Sussex keeper Charlotte Sole on 31 minutes. Shrubb was very close to her hat-trick on several occasions before the break but it was Catherine O'Hagan who extended the lead on 40 minutes, finishing a delightful Naomi Cole chipped pass.
Lauren Cheshire and Faye Rabson combined excellently down the right for Rabson to send over an inviting cross which was headed inches wide as Sussex threatened to build a commanding interval lead.
The fourth goal was not long in coming after the break. Shrubb hit the post from a narrow angle but it was Cole who powered in a 30-yard beauty over Army keeper Becky Davies on 53 minutes. Shrubb struck the woodwork again a minute later as the chances continued for the hosts.
The Combined Services champions never gave up and suddenly clawed their way back into the match with two goals in three minutes. Both had an element of good fortune as first Kellie Cox rolled a shot through Sole's hands then a left wing centre found its way into the net off the far post.
With 20 minutes still to play, Sussex might have been made to pay for their earlier misses. As it was, the Army defence gifted a fifth goal to Sussex's Hollie Wride who finished well after a defensive mix up on 79 minutes.
Although the Army kept pressing forward to the end, the last word went to Sussex with another fine Cole finish from distance in the 90th minute.
Both sides deserve credit for serving up an enjoyable spectacle in the crossfield gale and later the driving rain which arrived in the second half. The core of the Sussex team play in the Premier League for Brighton & Hove Albion and Lewes, with high flying Chichester City of the South East Combination also represented. The Army fought hard but were hard pressed to keep at bay the combined firepower of the Sussex attackers.
