Women's Football News
The year has begun when Wales hosts its first ever UEFA Championship Finals.
The UEFA Under-19 Championships tournament will be held in South West Wales from 19th to 31st August 2013.
Eight national teams will take part, including Wales as hosts. It is the first time that a tournament has been awarded to Wales and the FAW is honoured and delighted to have been chosen. It is a great opportunity to showcase women's football in Wales and to act as a 'springboard' to create more enthusiasm in the women's and girls game in the country.
The tournament will be played on a two league basis, followed by the semi finals and finals.
Venues and match dates will be confirmed soon and the draw for the finals will take place in Wales later in the spring. Teams will stay in Swansea and Llanelli. Matches are expected to take place in Carmarthen (Richmond Park), Llanelli (Stebonheath Park and Parc y Scarlets) and Haverfordwest (Bridge Meadow). Training grounds will be used in Port Talbot, Tata Steel, Afan Lido, Swansea University, Garden Village FC amongst others.
The Wales squad, under manager Jarmo Matikainen, are playing friendly matches during this season as they do not have to qualify, as well as having regular fitness and training camps as they build up to the tournament.
If you would like to get involved in the tournament next August as a volunteer (we need drivers, ball kids, hospitality staff, team liaison officers with European language skills) contact Rachel Shiner at the FAW offices on: email@example.com.
