With their two title rivals on F.A.Women's Cup duty, Watford took the opportunity to step up their challenge with a 1-0 win away to Barnet.
Chloe Gunn scored the only goal of the game from a corner in the 59th minute for a result which sees the Golden Girls move to within two points of leaders Sunderland, having played one game more.
Manchester City are now heading the teams chasing after the top three following their 3-0 success at Coventry City. Sarah Buffel finished off a good move to put the Citizens in front on the quarter hour and an unfortunate own goal by Sky Blues defender Emma Hollingsworth doubled their lead five minutes later. The third goal came shortly afterwards, in-form striker Krystle Johnston firing home after breaking through the Coventry defence.
Cardiff City Ladies are up into the top half of the table after they defeated Portsmouth 2-0. Kelly Isaac netted both goals for the South Wales side, giving them a 69th minute lead before sewing up the points in injury time to give them their second win in successive weeks.
Charlton Athletic meanwhile picked up an important 1-0 win against Aston Villa which puts a gap of six points between themselves and the bottom two places. Kit Graham settled matters in the Addicks' favour when she scored the only goal of the game just before half time.
