A Bridgwater College student has won a prestigious scholarship to play football at Rider University, in the USA.
Bethany-May Howard, 17, from Glastonbury, studies A Levels and plays for the College's Football Academy. Her playing career started when she was just five years old and attending Butleigh Primary School, after which she progressed to various junior teams, including Ashcott, Butleigh and Somerset under 16s.
Bethany-May won many accolades during her time at local clubs, including Manager's Player of the Season at Somerset under 16s, Player's Player of the Season with the Somerset Under-17s and Player of the Year at Bridgwater College.
Andy Gill, Associate Lecturer at Bridgwater College and Bethany-May's manager, put her forward for the England Colleges' trials, where she was successful in gaining a place in the national team and played a number of international matches across two seasons. It was at one of these training camps that a representative from Pass4Soccer inspired Bethany-May to pursue a scholarship in America.
Bethany-May, formally of St. Dunstan's School said, "I am incredibly nervous about moving to America; however I'm more excited now to see how things will develop, especially after my visit there in February!"
Rider University, which is based in New Jersey, is one of the top northern universities and Bethany-May will major in History whilst playing for the University's 'soccer' team.
