Emma seals Scotland win
 Women's Football News 8 Apr 2013

Scotland 2 (J.Ross 5, Mitchell 68) Wales 1 (Harding 12)
at East End Park, Dunfermline Athletic FC

Local girl Emma Mitchell sealed victory for Scotland at East End Park in their first home match of 2013.

Fifer Mitchell, currently playing for SGS Essen in Germany, made it a perfect homecoming as she drew huge cheers from the Dunfermline crowd with her 68th minute winner.

Jane Ross is preparing to start the season with Swedish side Vittsjö GIK, and she was Scotland's main attacking threat, grabbing the opener after just five minutes. Jenny Beattie's flick-on caught the Welsh defence off guard, and Ross latched on to the ball in the box to stroke it past Welsh goalkeeper Nicola Davies.

Scotland were enjoying all of the early pressure, but it was Wales who struck next. There was a flash of danger as Helen Ward burst down the left wing, but her low cross was weak and easily held by Shannon Lynn, winning her ninth cap as she made her first home start in goal.

A few minutes later, Natasha Harding pounced in midfield and raced clear to lift the ball over the advancing Lynn.

Wales grew in confidence after the equaliser, with captain Jessica Fishlock influential in midfield. She nipped past Hayley Lauder on the right wing to send a cross into the box. Sophie Ingle and Sarah Wiltshire both had efforts blocked by the Scotland defence before Lynn saved from Ward. A few minutes later, Lynn got down to make another save from Ward.

Scotland regained their early vigour as the half came to a close. Ross wriggled free on the right wing, but Kylie Davies headed the cross clear. The striker then picked up the ball in midfield and ran at the Wales goal, but her effort hit a wall of defenders. Hayley Lauder sent in a cross from the left that fell to Mitchell, but her shot was well over the bar.

Kim Little, captain in the absence of Gemma Fay in goal, went on a driving run down the left wing. Ross couldn't connect with the cross and the ball fell to Jo Love at the edge of the box, but her shot was blocked.

Ross had a golden opportunity to put Scotland ahead when she raced clear on goal, but her low angled shot just edged round the post. Wales had another opportunity through a Fishlock free kick, but the Scotland wall held firm.

Scotland started the second half as they ended the first, with Ross again instrumental in their attacking play. She sent a cross in to Lauder at the edge of the box, and the shot looked goalbound, but Fishlock cleared off the line.

There were claims for a penalty when Lauder sent a short corner to Little on the edge of the box. Her low shot appeared to hit the hand of Fishlock, but referee Lorraine Clark waved play on.

Fay replaced Lynn in goal at half time, and was called into action when Ward pounced on a loose ball and broke free. The Celtic goalkeeper raced out of her box and made a great challenge to clear the danger.

Ward had another opportunity when she took advantage of a mis-timed header by Rhonda Jones, but she blasted her shot well over the bar.

Scotland continued to press for the winner. Mitchell sent a long range effort well wide before she delighted her local crowd by beating Davies with a low shot.

Scotland had an opportunity to make it three when Ross went on a blistering run from deep in her own half and squared the ball to Little, but Carys Hawkins cleared the danger.
