Sunderland were beaten for the first time this season as a late goal earned Charlton Athletic a 2-1 victory.
The Wearsiders needed a point from the game in order to return to the top of the National Division in place of Watford but they found themselves a goal behind on the stroke of half time when Gemma Shepherd gave Charlton the lead.
Beth Mead levelled for Sunderland midway through the second half but Shepherd settled matters in the dying minutes when she scored the winner from the penalty spot.
The result also gave fresh hope to Leeds Utd whose quest for a possible 'double' is now back on. They pepped up their title challenge with a 1-0 victory away to Cardiff City Ladies, given to them by a sixth minute goal from Natalie Staneff, and they are now five points behind second placed Sunderland, with a game in hand.
Coventry City moved themselves closer towards a top half place by beating Barnet 3-2. Renata Inniss had given Barnet the lead but Courtney Sweetman-Kirk scored twice to put the Sky Blues in front and she duly completed her hat-trick after the break. Holly Sandow pulled one back for the Bees but her side now look destined to finish bottom of the table following this latest setback.
