Watford Reserves clinched the FA Women's Premier League Reserve Southern Division Two title in style with a 3-1 away win against their nearest rivals Reading FC Women Reserves.
Needing a point to be assured of first place, Watford scored twice in the opening half, resisted a spirited challenge from the Royals and added a third midway through the second half. A late consolation from the hosts did not spoil the celebrations.
There was nothing to choose between the teams in a tight opening 20 minutes and it took a very special 25-yard left foot effort from Kelly Gallagher to break the deadlock on 21 minutes. Paige Logie added a second five minutes later with a neat finish after beating the defence to a long through ball. Reading twice went very close to reducing the deficit before the break but the two-goal margin remained at the interval.
The crucial third goal came midway through the second half when Ashleigh Deacon found the net from a tight angle with the aid of a slight deflection. Watford had to defend a number of corners but keeper Hollie Augustus and her defence were only beaten once in the final seconds.
Watford celebrated the title win with champagne at the final whistle. Manager Rob Morris, coach Carlan Edgar and the team have another big match next week when they face Arsenal Reserves in the Hertfordshire FA Cup Final at Letchworth.
