Norwich City Ladies continued their dominance of the Norfolk Women's Cup competition on Sunday afternoon, defeating Acle United 6-1 at the FDC to lift the silverware for the third successive season. On a beautiful day, it was Norwich who took the early initiative, but Acle soon settled and had the first notable attempts on goal. First, in the 7th minute, Jenna Thurtle fired a free kick a yard over the bar, before Joanne Hooper tested Canaries keeper Fiona Coombes with a shot from distance a minute later. Despite enjoying much of the possession, it wasn't until the 15th minute that the Canaries had their first attempt at goal, with Anna Larkins cutting in from the right wing and curling a left footed shot wide of the post. Norwich were looking a threat down both sides of the pitch, with Kyla Love working the left channel to compliment the endeavours of Larkins down the right. Approaching the 25th minute Norwich carved a couple of half chances, but again missed the target with both. First Gemma Farman hit a rising shot from just outside the box, which cleared the bar, then Nadine Basson met a cross with her head but directed her effort the wrong side of the upright. As the half progressed Larkins continued to look a threat and she proved to be the deadlock breaker, dashing in on goal through the middle and slotting the ball under Cara Anderson in the Acle goal after 34 minutes. Shaken from going behind, Acle conceded for a second time just a minute later. This time captain Kate Parsons beat Anderson from an angle inside the box, after a foray forward from the heart of defence. However, Acle clawed their way back into the game prior to the break in the 41st minute, when Thurtle this time hit the target with a powerful free kick from distance. The second half was eight minutes old before the next notable chance arrived. The opportunity fell to Norwich's Basson, who volleyed high over the bar from 15 yards out. However, substitute Vicki Stephens showed a clinical streak two minutes later, making no mistake from 10 yards to fire a third goal for the Canaries, having being found in space at the back post. Stephens then added her second and Norwich's fourth after 61 minutes, showing excellent close control and footwork in the box to turn and rifle a left footed drive low into the bottom corner. Norwich were enjoying the bulk of the play and came close to scoring a fifth after 70 minutes, when Parsons saw her header crash back off the post following a high ball into the box. The fifth goal eventually arrived shortly after when Basson had the easy task of slotting into the corner of the net after the ball had been played across the six yard line to find her unmarked in space. The Canaries then added a sixth and final goal in additional time, with Basson grabbing her second of the afternoon, to seal an impressive victory for the Yellows.
