Sunderland require two wins from their final three matches in order to complete a hat-trick of National Division titles following Sunday's matches.
Two goals from Sarah McFadden and one apiece from Beth Mead and Sophie Williams ensured that the Lady Black Cats kept their push on track as they consolidated top spot with a 4-0 victory away to Cardiff City Ladies.
Watford made sure of staying two points behind Sunderland as they returned to winning ways with a 3-0 success against Charlton Athletic. Chloe Gunn gave Watford the lead when she drove home the opening goal on the stroke of half time and ten minutes into the second half, Emma Beckett doubled their advantage from a free kick. Kate Natkiel completed the win for the Golden Girls by scoring the final goal late on.
Leeds Utd meanwhile received a setback as they drew 1-1 with fourth placed Aston Villa. Katy Moran was on target for Villa with Leeds replying through Rachel Lee.
Portsmouth meanwhile gave themselves a chance of climbing out of the bottom two by beating Barnet 2-1. All of the goals came late on, Charley Wilson giving Pompey the lead with fifteen minutes remaining and after Lois Colley had levelled the scores for the Bees, Leeta Rutherford gave Portsmouth the points with an injury time winner.
