Villa joy after shootout triumph

Aston Villa won 5-4 on penalties

Goalkeeper Megan Walsh was the heroine for Aston Villa as they landed their first major trophy with a penalty shootout victory over Leeds Utd in the Premier League Cup Final at York.

A stubborn defensive rearguard from Villa ensured that the Final went to penalties for the second time in three years and that Leeds suffered the pain of defeat for the second season in a row.

In front of a crowd of 1,257 at Bootham Crescent, the first half was tightly contested and chances were scarce at either end. The best opportunity came for Leeds when Carey Huegett set up Danielle Sheen whose shot was saved by Walsh.

The game opened up a little more in the second half and Villa went close as a Chloe Jones shot was saved by Jules Draycott in the Leeds goal. The resulting corner was met at the far post by Jade Richards but her header was just off target.

Leeds began to press and a Rachel Lee free kick picked out Emma Lipman whose deflected header came back off the post. Lee herself was also to go agonisingly close from another free kick, this time a 30-yard piledriver which crashed against the bar.

From that point things tightened up again and defences began to dominate. Villa's defensive duo of Richards and captain Dani Petrovic were in excellent form while Hayley Sharp and Nat Staneff kept things equally tight at the other end. The closest either side came to scoring in normal time came late on from a good Leeds move but Olivia Thackray's volley was narrowly over from Bekki Bass' cross.

Extra time could not provide a winner with two tiring teams being unable to fashion any clear cut chances and the game went to a penalty shootout.

The decisive moment came when Leeds captain Clare Sykes - so influential during her side's Cup run - saw her penalty saved by Villa heroine Walsh and it was left to Carly Davies to tuck home the winning kick and spark off wild celebrations from her team.
