The Priory School won the Silver Jubilee Trophy with a tremendous 5-0 win over Dane Court GS, on Thursday 2nd May at Margate FC.
On a cool spring evening the condition were very good for a cup final and Amy Zaza got the evening to lively start with a shot in the opening minutes. The game started in a frantic paced with both teams trying to put pressure on the other and with plenty of nerves in the air, possession shifted from quickly from other team to another, however the school from Orpington were made a breakthrough after ten minutes. Jade Smith picked up a loose ball in midfield and drove forward into space. The pitch opened up and within a few touches the midfielder found herself at the edge of the penalty area and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
After the initial fast and furious start to the game both team were able to put their nerves to one side and retain possession for a number of passes. Nevertheless as the game developed in the first half it was becoming evident that Priory were on top as Nicole Pepper (Priory) and Mia Adams (Dane Court) were having their own duel as the Priory skipper had three terrific long range efforts tipped around the post or over the bar. The Priory were pushing on without creating any clear chances and Dane Court were defending firmly. The team in gold and black also pushed forward although the Priory defence remained stubborn led by Henry and D'Urso as they competed with Boifot and Woodward-Lebihan.
With one goal separating the teams at half time, everyone in attendance; fans, players, coaches could see the next goal would be vital and the noisy crowd did not have to wait for something to cheer about. Minutes into the second half Pepper played a short corner with Joynes and then rounded the oncoming defender. The Priory no 11 got her head up and crossed for Smith at the far post to head home for hers and Priory's second goal.
Moments later it was back to the future as the Priory School scored via another corner. There was a big commotion in the goalmouth after the delivery and Smith was alert to make the decisive touch, poking the ball over the line.
Priory were now in a dominant position but the girls from Broadstairs were determined not to let Priory run away with the game. Dane Court dug deep and were spurred on by the loud instructions and encouragement from Cosby and Todd in midfield. Dane Court had a few corners but could not replicate the Priory's success at set pieces. Moments later however the game was very much under control when another corner combination of Pepper and Smith made it four-nil to the 'away' school.
In the dying moments of the gate Volu, who had been closely shackled by Tonkiss for the entire game, entered a foot race and the no14 from Priory showed some grease lightning speed to accelerate away. Adams made another great low save to but Zaza appeared on the scene to smash home the loose ball.
