Sunderland have closed to within one victory of a hat-trick of Premier League titles when they ran out 3-0 winners away to Aston Villa.
A late first half goal by Kelly McDougall gave the Wearsiders the advantage and further strikes by Beth Mead and Abbey Joice ahead of the hour mark sealed the victory. Sunderland will be crowned as Champions if they beat Cardiff City Ladies this Sunday.
Only Leeds Utd can now prevent Sunderland from winning the title and they kept those hopes alive with a 2-1 victory at Coventry City. Hayley Sharp gave Leeds the lead six minutes before half time and after Courtney Sweetman-Kirk had levelled the scores during the second half, Sharp popped up again with eight minutes remaining to net her second goal and secure the points for her side.
Manchester City moved up into fourth place as they won 2-1 away to Portsmouth. The home side went in front in the seventh minute through Jemma Tewkesbury and after Abbie McManus had equalised ahead of the interval, Lindsay Savage settled matters in the 73rd minute when she scored from a free kick. However it needed a fine late save by 16-year-old goalkeeper Beth Seasman to confirm the win for City.
Cardiff City Ladies completed a good day for away teams and an excellent week for themselves by beating Charlton Athletic 4-0. Zoe Atkins gave the FAW Women's Cup winners a fifth minute lead which was doubled before the break by Paige Stewart. Three minutes into the second half, Stewart netted her second from the penalty spot and Ellie Smith wrapped up the win with the fourth goal.
