Sunderland have completed a hat-trick of Premier League titles after they won 2-0 against Cardiff City Ladies.
A large crowd gathered in the sunshine at the Hetton Centre on Sunday to witness a solid performance as the Lady Black Cats took the points needed to ensure they became Champions of the National Division for the third successive season. An early Sarah McFadden goal seemed to settle the nerves but Cardiff came back strongly and the Sunderland defence had to be at their best to hold onto their lead at the break. The second half was end to end as both sides pushed for a goal and it took a strike from Keira Ramshaw midway through the half to confirm that the Premier League trophy would be staying on Wearside.
Sunderland's last match of the season is next Sunday against Leeds Utd, who will need to avoid defeat in that game to pip Watford to the runners-up spot. Leeds moved closer to second place as they won 2-1 away to Portsmouth, Emma Coates scoring both goals to earn her side the points despite Gemma Hillier grabbing a late consolation for Pompey.
Manchester City guaranteed themselves a top half finish with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, who are set to end up in sixth. City took the lead midway through the second half through Lynda Shepherd with Carly Davies hitting back to earn a share of the spoils for Villa.
