Rachel Unitt will miss the rest of the season and is out of the Euro 2013 Finals after sustaining a serious knee injury.
The 30-year-old full back, who has been capped 102 times for her country, picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the first half of Birmingham City's 1-1 draw with Lincoln Ladies in the Continental Cup on Sunday, a match which also saw England captain Casey Stoney forced off with a hamstring injury.
It is a second blow in successive years for Unitt, one of the women's game's most popular players, after an ankle injury ended her hopes of playing for Team GB in the 2012 London Olympics.
With Claire Rafferty also ruled out of the Finals, Steph Houghton is now England's only regular left back in the squad. Liverpool defender Lucy Bronze has been called up for a preparation camp but the door may now have opened for one of in-form Bristol Academy captain Corinne Yorston, Kerys Harrop of Birmingham City, Everton youngster Alex Greenwood or Arsenal's Gilly Flaherty.
