Lincoln and Belles in stalemate

Lincoln were held by local rivals Doncaster Rovers Belles as the league's bottom two teams cancelled each other out in a goalless draw.

Lincoln came closest to grabbing a winner, but with neither team able to create a clear opening, both sides were forced to share the points.

Within ten minutes Lincoln almost took the lead. Sophie Walton did well to rob Thomson in the middle of the pitch, before feeding the ball to Precious Hamilton. The striker turned well and slipped the ball to former Doncaster striker Carla Cantrell but Hobbs, Lincoln's previous number one, was out smartly to win the ball and clear for a throw in.

Lincoln's victories in the midfield battle were proving fruitful, as Emily Roberts won the ball in the middle before passing to Clarke. The winger ran at Little before unleashing a shot which Hobbs saved well.

Despite Lincoln having the better of the early stages, Sue Smith found herself in a promising position inside the home team's box, however Sophie Bradley recovered well to slide in and clear.

As the first half reached the halfway mark Doncaster almost gifted Lincoln the lead. Little's ball back to Hobbs didn't have enough on it and Cantrell stole in to side step the ball past the onrushing keeper, however she found herself too wide to shoot and the defence recovered well as her lay off to Roberts was cleared.

The best move of the first half came after 25 minutes. Jess Clarke played Precious Hamilton into a promising position down the wing, her cross was deflected but fell kindly for her strike partner Cantrell. The former Leeds player held the ball well before laying it back to Jess Clarke on the wing, her first time cross found Megan Harris but the midfielder could only head over.

With just seven minutes of the half to go Hamilton found herself in a golden position. After Cantrell's ball had found its way to Harris, the midfielder flicked it past Little and set Hamilton through with a clear sight of goal twelve yards out. However Doncaster captain Little recovered well and did enough to put Hamilton off, the striker firing wide.

The second half started much like the first, with both teams pushing hard looking for the opener, creating a scrappy affair.

Just after the hour mark, Lincoln came close to grabbing the lead. Jess Clarke turned her marker and raced down to the goal line, from here the winger cut in sharply and drove the ball across goal but no-one could get the final telling touch.

A series of corners caused problems in the Doncaster box, the ball eventually being cleared to Cantrell, the striker drilling a shot to Hobbs' near post, the keeper tipping the ball around the post. The resulting corner was played short, but Clarke was adjudged offside as Cantrell's cross was swung in.

Time was quickly running out as both sides were pushing for a winner, the Belles coming more into the game as it entered the final fifteen minutes. Doncaster's best chance came as Cheryl Foster broke through the Lincoln defence and as she bore down on Bardsley's goal, Amy Turner sprinted back and saved a golden opportunity for the striker with a brave sliding challenge.

As the game entered its final five minutes, Lincoln manager Rick Passmoor pushed Martha Harris up front, with almost immediate effect. Hamilton and Harris battled their way into the box, via a deflection, Hobbs pouncing on the ball six yards out as Harris looked to apply the final touch. The same combination created a similar opportunity in stoppage time, this time the ball falling to Hamilton who fired wide.

Despite both team's best efforts, neither side was able to make the breakthrough and both teams still await their first league victory of the 2013 season.
