Gareth Evans appointed Scotland Under-19 coach
 Women's Football News 18 Jun 2013

Former Hibernian and Livingston manager, Gareth Evans, has been appointed as Scotland women's Under-19 national coach.

Evans made more than 250 appearances for Hibs between 1988 and 1996, lifting the Scottish League Cup in 1991. He also played for Coventry, Rotherham, Partick Thistle, Airdrie and Alloa.

He went on to become assistant manager at both Alloa and Brechin, before returning to Hibs as reserve team coach in 2007. He had a period as caretaker manager at the Edinburgh club, before moving to Livingston as assistant manager in 2011, later becoming manager. Evans recently gained the UEFA Pro Licence, the top coaching qualification in Europe.

He succeeds former Scotland defender Shelley Kerr, who left her post as Scotland women's Under-19 national coach to become manager of the UK's most successful women's club, Arsenal, earlier this year.

Evans told www.scottishfa.co.uk: "This is the first time that I have worked in the women's game, but I get a real sense that there are exciting times ahead.

"Women's football is growing in Scotland, and the development of the women's national team over the last few years has been incredible. I'm looking forward to being a part of that, and helping to continue the flow of talented young players in to the senior squad.

"I worked alongside women's national coach, Anna Signeul, on the UEFA Pro Licence course, and her passion for developing the women's game in Scotland was infectious.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to work in international football, and be part of a real growth area of the game."

Scotland women's national coach, Anna Signeul, said: "We are delighted to welcome Gareth to our team of coaches. He brings a wealth of experience from the senior men's game to this post, and I believe this appointment highlights the growing status of the women's game in Scotland.

"I studied for the UEFA Pro Licence alongside Gareth and saw his coaching abilities first-hand.

"I have been impressed by his professionalism and personality, and I look forward to working with him to develop the next generation of Scotland players."

Scottish FA performance director, Mark Wotte, said: "Gareth has great credentials in the game and I was impressed with his style and philosophy of play at Livingston, both at youth and first team level.

"He will be a great addition to Anna Signeul's staff as we work to take the women's game to the next level."
