Norway foiled by late spot kick
 Women's Football News 11 Jul 2013

Norway 1 (Hegland 26) Iceland 1 (M.Vidarsdottir pen 87)
A late penalty earned Iceland a point in the opening Group B clash in Kalmar but Norway were left to rue a string of missed chances which were to prove costly for them.

Iceland had the better of possession during the early stages but Norway began to take control in the midfield areas and Caroline Hansen was in lively form down the right.

Norway broke through on 26 minutes via a 'route one' goal. Goalkeeper Ingrid Hjelmseth pumped a long ball forward and Kristine Hegland won the initial header before receiving it back from Ada Hegerberg and bravely stabbing her shot past the oncoming Gudbjorg Gunnarsdottir, the ball going in off the post.

The goal clearly inspired Norway and they piled on the pressure, Solveig Gulbrandsen almost doubling their lead shortly afterwards but her header was off target. Hansen went close with a shot which hit the side netting and Hederberg drove an effort across the face of goal but the Norwegians could not add to their lead ahead of the interval.

Iceland rallied after the restart with Holmfridur Magnusdottir going close and Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir got into a good position in the area but her header lacked power and the chance was lost.

Norway still had chances to kill the game off but did not take them and nerves started to take over in the latter stages as Iceland began to push forward. Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir made a strong run into the area but once again her shot lacked power and Hjelmseth saved comfortably.

With three minutes left, Gunnarsdottir again broke into the area where this time she was brought down by Marit Christensen and a penalty was awarded. Margret Lara Vidarsdottir kept her cool from the spot and tucked the ball home to put her side on level terms.

Norway were inches away from going back in front during injury time as Lene Mykjaland drove in a low cross from the right and Glodis Viggosdottir sliced her clearance just over the bar, to her side's relief.
