Crucial win for Italy
 Women's Football News 13 Jul 2013

Italy 2 (Gabbiadini 55, Mauro 60) Denmark 1 (Brogaard 66)
Italy took a huge step towards a place in the quarter finals as two second half goals earned them a vital victory over Denmark in Halmstad.

Denmark started the game brightly with Pernille Harder drilling a shot inches wide after being set up by Johanna Rasmussen. Harder again went close when she intercepted a clearance from Elisa Bartoli and fired over.

Rasmussen was in fine form out wide and she almost created a clear cut chance for Sofie Pedersen but her teasing cross just evaded the striker in front of goal.

Italy rode out the early storm and began to enjoy periods of pressure themselves but it wasn't until the second half that they started to get on top and a warning sign for Denmark came when the industrious Alessia Tuttino struck the bar.

Ten minutes after the restart, the deadlock was finally broken. The ball broke to Melania Gabbiadini just outside the area and her shot took a deflection off Line Roddik and went past a wrong footed Stina Petersen.

Before Denmark could recover, they found themselves two goals behind five minutes later. Bartoli made a good run down the left and crossed for Patrizia Panico whose header was parried by Petersen and Ilaria Mauro followed up to tuck home the rebound.

Denmark needed a quick riposte and it came within six minutes, Mariann Knudsen's pass setting up Mia Brogaard to sidefoot in and give her side renewed hope.

As the game went into the dying minutes, Denmark threw everything at Italy but just couldn't make the breakthrough. Roddik was inches off target with a strike from the edge of the area, a great cross by Rasmussen was not attacked properly by three of her team mates, then finally Katrine Pedersen did really well to set up a glorious chance for Nadia Nadim ten yards from goal but she drove her shot wide and the Danes' final opportunity had gone.
