Solveig edges Norway closer
 Women's Football News 14 Jul 2013
Norway 1 (Gulbrandsen 54mins) Holland 0
A brilliant individual goal from experienced midfielder Solveig Gulbrandsen has taken Norway to the brink of qualification for the quarter finals.
Norway started the game well and Ada Hederberg went close from a Maren Mjelde cross, her header being saved by Loes Geurts. They were to go even closer shortly afterwards, Ingvild Stensland's corner being met by Marit Christensen but Sherida Spitse was well placed to head off the line.
Both teams were pressing forward at every opportunity but were finding it hard to create clear cut opportunities, Norway's best moments were coming from exciting young winger Caroline Hansen whilst Holland were struggling to break down a solid Norwegian defence despite the efforts of the pacey Manon Melis.
Norway seized the initiative after the break and again were inches away from scoring from a set piece, this time Christensen's header beating Dyanne Bito on the line but coming back off the post.
The breakthrough was soon to come though, a clearance from Claudia van den Heiligenberg went as far as Gulbrandsen who drove into the area past two challenges and, after spurning a chance to shoot from a similar position two minutes earlier, made no mistake this time as she powered her shot into the roof of the net.
Hansen fired over moments later and drove a dangerous ball across the face of goal which just eluded Hegerberg.
Holland rallied and tried hard to get themselves back on terms and a long range strike from Renee Slegers was turned over the bar by Ingrid Hjelmseth.
Then an extraordinary goalmouth scramble ensued from a Dutch corner as no less than six Norwegian defenders managed to charge down shots by Kirsten van de Ven and Daphne Koster, the ball rebounding for Anouk Hoogendijk whose looping header struck the bar.
Memories of Norway conceding a late equaliser three days earlier would have returned but despite Hoogendijk having another header charged down, a well drilled Norway defence stood firm in the pouring rain to secure three valuable points.
