Germany too strong for Iceland
 Women's Football News 14 Jul 2013

Germany kick started their Euro 2013 campaign with a powerful performance which could have brought an even bigger margin of victory.

Only a string of good saves from Icelandic goalkeeper Gudbjorg Gunnarsdottir kept the score down and a draw in their final match with Norway would seal Germany's place as Group B winners.

Germany powered forward in search of an early goal with Dzsenifer Marozsan having a volley saved and then Gunnarsdottir made a great save, tipping a Lena Lotzen header onto the bar from a Marozsan free kick.

The pressure eventually told and Marozsan was heavily involved again in the opening goal, threading a brilliant pass into the path of Lotzen who stepped inside a challenge before planting her shot into the corner of the net.

It looked like being two just before half time as Leonie Maier broke down the right and crossed for Celia Okoyino Da Mbabi who shot on the turn but Gunnarsdottir pulled off a tremendous diving save to her left and then got up to make an equally good stop as Lotzen tried to drill home the rebound.

Gunnarsdottir had given an outstanding first half display, however she was badly let down by her defence ten minutes after the restart. The initial danger seemed to have gone when Da Mbabi was crowded out but Holmfridur Magnusdottir inexplicably tried to dribble past Maier in her own penalty area. Maier won the ball and drove a shot at goal which Gunnarsdottir got a hand to but Da Mbabi was on hand to fire home the rebound off the underside of the bar.

Da Mbabi went close again from a cross by the excellent Marozsan but the striker was not to be denied with six minutes remaining, this time slotting home a Fatmire Bajramaj cross from close range to give the game a more realistic scoreline.
