France ease into last eight
 Women's Football News 16 Jul 2013

France 1 (Renard 5) Spain 0
France became the first team to seal their place in the quarter finals after an early Wendie Renard goal was enough to give them victory over Spain.

England's 1-1 draw with Russia meant that the winners of the game would be guaranteed qualification whilst a win for France would confirm them as group winners with a game to play.

Les Bleues got off to the perfect start when taking the lead with only five minutes on the clock, Louisa Necib's pinpoint corner picking out Renard who lost her marker to power a downward header into the corner of the net.

Spain tried to reply with Adriana Martin having a shot saved by Sarah Bouhaddi but at the other end, Ainhoa Tirapu produced an even better stop as she dived to turn a rasping Necib shot over the bar.

Despite France always looking strong going forward, Spain stuck to their close passing game and it almost brought them reward when Jennifer Hermoso slid an inch perfect pass into the path of Sonia who took the ball past the oncoming Bouhaddi and crossed for Adriana but she was crowded out by the French defence.

Both teams were playing some excellent passing football and the next chance came France's way, Marie-Laure Delie's pass releasing the classy Gaetane Thiney who cut inside a challenge before her shot was well saved by Tirapu.

France elected to rest the experienced Sandrine Soubeyrand at half time and introduced Elodie Thomis up front but in truth they were in second gear for most of the second half, content mainly to sit on their lead.

Spain persisted once again with possession football with Veronica Boquete prompting but just couldn't break down a strong French defence in which Renard and Laura Georges excelled.

At the other end, Tirapu needed to save from Camille Abily and Delie headed over and despite a late rally from Spain, France saw the game out to confirm their place in the last eight.
