Russia's cruel exit after draw
 Women's Football News 18 Jul 2013

Russia 1 (Terekhova 44) Spain 1 (Boquete 14)
Russia kept their Euro 2013 hopes alive after surviving a first half onslaught to pick up a point and send themselves into a lottery as one of the best third placed teams.

However an hour after the game finished, they were eliminated by the cruellest of methods when Denmark were handed the last quarter final berth in the drawing of lots whilst Spain took the runners-up position in Group C and can look forward to taking on Norway in the last eight.

The first chance of the game went Russia's way when Elena Morozova shot wide following a long run but Spain settled into their usual passing rhythm and it led to them going in front. Adriana Martin burst down the left and cut into the area, drawing a defender before her low cross was sidefooted into the far corner of the net by Veronica Boquete.

Just two minutes later there was an extraordinary scramble in which Russia goalkeeper Elvira Todua seemed to take on the Spanish side on her own. First she kept out Adriana's curling shot before getting up to block from Putellas and then deny the same player again with a third save. Jennifer Hermoso slotted home the loose ball but an offside flag cut short her celebrations.

Todua again saved well from Adriana, blocking her angled shot with her legs, as Russia somehow managed to hold out under the increasing pressure before coming up with a stunning reply on the brink of half time.

The strong running Morozova broke down the left and found Nelli Korovkina, who set up Elena Terekhova to drill a shot past Ainhoa Tirapu from just inside the area for the equaliser.

Morozova went close at the start of the second half when her shot was saved at the near post by Tirapu and then, for the second match in a row, Russia were denied what looked to be a stonewall penalty when Terekhova appeared to be upended by Elisabeth Ibarra in the area.

Back came Spain and Boquete was inches away from her second goal when she struck the bar with a strike from the edge of the area.

Vicky Losada was not far off target with a long range strike and Adriana hit the outside of the post with another firm strike as Spain finished strongly but the spoils were shared at the end of the game, with heartbreak on its way shortly afterwards for the Russians.
