Norway see off Spain challenge
 Women's Football News 22 Jul 2013
Norway 3 (Gulbrandsen 24, Paredes og 43, Hegerberg 64) Spain 1 (Hermoso 90)
Norway advanced to the semi finals for the fourth time in a row following a convincing victory over Spain at Kalmar.
Spain did settle down well at the start of the game and created the first opportunity when Adriana Martin's volley was blocked from a corner, but Norway began to impose themselves with Solveig Gulbrandsen once again at the forefront of their play and the midfielder fired a warning shot with an effort from the edge of the area that sailed over.
The deadlock was broken midway through the second half but it was slightly fortuitous circumstances that saw Norway go ahead. Gulbrandsen curled in a cross from the right, Ada Hederberg attempted to volley but did not connect and the ball evaded the dive of Ainhoa Tirapu and found the corner of the net.
Kirstine Hegland nearly added a second shortly afterwards but her shot was charged down by Ruth Garcia. Spain meanwhile went close when Jennifer Hermoso's looping header was held by Ingrid Hjelmseth but they were flattened by a second goal just before half time.
Ingvild Stensland's free kick into the area was flicked on and in her attempt to clear, Irene Paredes horribly sliced her kick and it dropped agonisingly over a helpless Tirapu and under the bar for an own goal.
Norway were now in control and they looked for what would be a killer third from the start of the second half. It took a brave block from Marta Torrejon to keep out a goalbound volley from Stensland to keep her side in the game and from the resulting corner, Trine Ronning guided her header back across goal but just wide of the far post.
The third goal did come and it arrived via one of the goals of the tournament. Hegerberg received the ball from Caroline Hansen and turned on the edge of the area to curl a delightful shot past Tirapu and in off the post.
Spain did not give up and a delightful through ball from Veronica Boquete released Adriana on goal, however she elected to pass instead of shooting and the opportunity was lost. Back came Norway and substitute Elise Thorsnes had a shot charged down after once again threatening from a corner.
There was one last defiant moment from Spain who went out of the tournament on a high in injury time. Hermoso cut in from the left and exchanged passes with Boquete before drilling a right foot shot past Hjelmseth and in for a consolation goal.
Norway: Ingrid Hjelmseth, Kristine Hegland, Marit Christensen, Ingvild Stensland, Toril Akerhaugen, Maren Mjelde, Trine Ronning, Solveig Gulbrandsen, Ada Hegerberg (sub Elise Thorsnes 71mins), Caroline Hansen (sub Ingrid Ryland 81mins), Ingvild Isaksen (sub Cathrine Dekkerhus 76mins).
