Glasgow's seven-goal start
 Women's Football News 9 Aug 2013

Glasgow City got off to the perfect start in the UEFA Women's Champions League defeating Croatian Champions Osijek 7-0.

A hat-trick from Jo Love and goals from Sarah Crilly, Suzanne Lappin, Sarah Crilly and a penalty from Leanne Ross gave City a precious three points and a potentially crucial goal difference.

After a tight 3-2 win over the same opposition in the Champions League last year, City were under pressure to get a result in their opening Champions League game in Group Eight. Starting brightly, the Scottish Champions deservedly took the lead as Jo Love fired in off the post on 21 minutes.

Sarah Crilly added a second with a delightful lob over Osijek keeper Ivana Vrdowak minutes later, before Love went on to complete her hat-trick before the break, with the pick of the bunch being a magnificent strike from outside the box into the top corner. Sandwiched between Love's three goals was a powerful header from Sue Lappin as she rose highest to head home a corner.

Lisa Robertson scored her first European goal after coming on as a half time substitute and Leanne Ross added a seventh from the penalty spot after Suzanne Lappin was fouled in the box.

Commenting on his side's win and performance. Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, "It is great start to the group stage and it sets us up well now for Saturday's game. Obviously very pleasing was the debutants who fitted in very well and it was great to see Sarah Crilly and Lisa Robertson score their first European goals. However, it has to be said that it was a real team performance and it will be that which carries us through this tournament. We now have one day to prepare a team to prepare on Saturday."

Glasgow City face Birkirkara the Champions of Malta on Saturday at 16:00 CET.
