Blackburn Rovers claimed the biggest victory in the Northern Division on the opening day of the season when they defeated newly promoted Bradford City 4-0.
Hannah Forster gave Rovers a first half lead and after the break, Stephanie Marsh increased their advantage from a free kick. Katie Anderton made it three and Forster rounded off the scoring with her second goal.
There were plenty of goals on offer at Derby County where the home side defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-3. Wolves got off to a flying start with Laura McQuilkin putting them in front with just two minutes on the clock but within five more minutes, Derby were ahead thanks to Natalie Reay and Melissa Johnson. Dani Selmes quickly levelled things up for the visitors but by half time, Johnson and Reay had each netted their second goals. Cara Newton added a fifth for Derby during the latter stages of the second half to seal the points, despite Jordan Timmins-Ray grabbing a late consolation for Wolves.
Nottingham Forest got off to a winning start with a 1-0 success away to Preston North End. Trina Greaves gave her side victory with the only goal of the game in the 25th minute, via a powerful long range shot.
The other league newcomers, Stoke City claimed their first point in the league when sharing a 3-3 draw with Newcastle Utd. Laura Garside opened the scoring for Stoke in the second minute with Beth Gardener levelling matters just before half time. Chantelle Gallagher restored Stoke's lead early in the second half but Newcastle hit back strongly with Jess Foster equalising and Dannika Purdham putting them ahead for the first time, before Cassie Hyde earned Stoke a share of the spoils with four minutes remaining.
Sporting Club Albion meanwhile claimed a notable point from a 1-1 draw with Leeds Utd. After a well contested first half ended goalless, Leeds took the lead within a minute of the restart when Olivia Thackray produced a fine finish from the edge of the area. Albion hit back to level the scores just ahead of the hour mark when Robyn James crashed home a 25-yard strike via the underside of the bar.
