Wales Under-19s were beaten 1-0 by Belarus in their opening UEFA Women's Under-19 Championships qualifying round group match in MInsk.
Most of the Wales squad had been capped at Under-17 level, and many had featured in a 2-0 warm up match in Austria a few weeks ago.
The game was an even affair but on 17 minutes, midfielder Samantha Quayle scored an own goal which proved to be the only score of the game.
Both sides were equal in terms of possession and shots on target, but the home side hung on for an important victory.
Wales will now play Cyprus on Monday, then Russia on Thursday. Russia defeated Cyprus easily by 7-1 in the other group game.
Manager Jarmo Matikainen will leave the squad after today's first game to return to Wales to manage the senior squad for their opening FIFA World Cup match on Thursday evening in Cardiff, also against Belarus. Jayne Ludlow will be in charge of the Under-19s for the final two games.
Wales Under-19: Delyth Morgan, Laura Gait, Alys Hinchcliffe, Fiona Dodge, Rhian Cleverly, Georgia Evans, Samantha Quayle, Chloe Lloyd, Emma Beynon, Ellie Leek, Allie Young. Subs: Alesha McGlynn, Lia Lewis, Jessica Lowrie, Casey Thomas, Sophie Hancocks, Jade Boulton, Rebecah Gwyther.
