Carshalton Athletic 1 Watford Development 4
Watford Development reinforced their second place in the London & South East League Division One (London) table with a 4-1 away victory over league leaders Carshalton Athletic in a top of the table clash.
The young Watford team were well worth their victory over a depleted but spirited Carshalton team who were condemned to their first League defeat of the season by two goals in each half.
Ella Bale had the first effort on goal for the hosts, forcing a good save from Devels keeper Shamila Burgess. Kemina Webber was a constant menace for the home defence and forced Talia Baldwin into a save on 12 minutes. Carshalton's Laura Curtis went close with a lob in a lively and even opening quarter hour.
Watford gave notice of their attacking power with a flowing move down the right. Rebecca French threaded a ball which reached Webber whose curled shot struck the inside of the post and rolled back across goal. Watford took the lead on 26 minutes when Webber played in Sabrina Roach, who finished powerfully from close range. Webber was denied by a fine save on 34 minutes but fired home from the resulting corner.
Carshalton needed a quick reply before the break and they reduced the arrears when Alison Hall fired home after a corner was only half cleared. Bale had a shot well held as Carshalton finished the half strongly.
Playing with the slope and the ever increasing breeze in their favour, Watford were soon on the offensive. Webber drew another good save low to her right from Baldwin on 54 minutes then skipper Amy Radford was denied on 70 minutes. Webber successfully extended Watford's lead though on 73 minutes when sent clear of the defence.
Carshalton never gave up and had a great chance to get back in the game on 80 minutes. However, a penalty effort was saved by Burgess and the unsuccessful player received two yellow cards within a minute for foul play.
This incident ended the home team's hopes and Watford added to the disappintment with a fourth near the end when an excellent 25-yard effort rebounded from the bar giving a simple finish for Kayleigh Humphries.
Both teams had contributed to an enjoyable match which was a good advert for this league but it was Watford who had the edge in pace and mobility especially in attack. Carshalton remain a point ahead of their conquerors who have a game in hand in this nine team league.
