Dynamo win Leicestershire Plate - 24 Jan 2014 - Women's Football News

A crisp sunny Sunday afternoon saw Holmes Park play host to the Leicestershire & Rutland FA Plate Final between Oadby & Wigston Dynamo and Heather St Johns.
With both teams positioned in the top half of the East Midlands League Division One South, Oadby & Wigston knew it would be a difficult game but were up for the challenge.
The game started briskly with both teams pushing forward and defending well, with little clear cut chances for either side. Towards the end of the first half Oadby & Wigston began to gain the upper hand and it was only the skill of Heather's goalkeeper that stopped them from taking the lead. Eventually a rebound from a one-on-one with the keeper saw Kiri Herbert coolly slot the ball home to make it 1-0, and this is how it stood for the remaining ten minutes of the half.
With neither team making any changes during the break, the second half saw Heather come out fighting for the equaliser but Oadby's defence stood strong and controlled to deny Heather any clear cut chance.
Both teams knew the second goal would be decisive. With set pieces and corners looking the most likely way Heather would score, Oadby & Wigston regained the upper hand in midfield and down the wings.
Midway through the half, a perfect through ball and timely run down the left wing saw Victoria Bishop cut in to lob the keeper with a skilful shot, ending in the net to double Oadby & Wigston's lead.
Dynamo's continued pressure resulted in a perfectly executed header by Jess Keeling from a corner, and a second goal from Victoria Bishop killed off any chance of a comeback by Heather at 4-0.
Although Oadby & Wigston eventually won comprehensively, the score didn't reflect the attitude, skill and strength of Heather St Johns with both teams looking forward to meeting in the league.
