Copsewood (Coventry) are the Champions of the Midland Combination and are promoted to the Premier League after a 3-2 victory against Leicester City Ladies.
Knowing that they needed three points to clinch the league title, it appeared that the Copsewood players were suffering from nerves as they started slowly but slightly against the run of play they took the lead as Jodie McGuckin played in Nicola Foskett and she produced a fine finish into the bottom corner. Although the goal came as a boost, it didnt seem to improve the away side as they were still giving the ball away cheaply but on 20 minutes Kirstie Deacon intercepted a pass and she broke clear and rifled a shot against the underside of the bar and into the net.
At half time, Copsewood knew that they were fortunate to be ahead and that they needed to improve if they were to win the game but their second half couldn't have started any worse as former player Amanda Whalley produced a fine shot which left goalkeeper Nikki Duncan no chance and the game was now 2-1 in Copsewood's favour.
The following 35 minutes of the game were a tight affair as neither team threatened but with five minutes to go, Leicester equalised as Whalley scored her second goal of the match.
Looking slightly deflated, the Copsewood players still needed to produce one final push and with two minutes to go they scored a dramatic winner. McGuckin picked the ball up inside the Leicester half and as she was just outside the box she chipped a cross to the far post where Foskett was waiting and she hit the ball past the keeper, starting mass celebrations from the Copsewood players.
Copsewood have enjoyed a phenomenal season in which they have only been beaten once so far, by Doncaster Rovers Belles in the F.A.Women's Cup Fourth Round last week. Manager Ryan Conneely is understandably proud of his players and he said: "To win the league title and gain promotion to the Premier League is an incredible achievement and I can only thank everybody connected with Copsewood Coventry Ladies."
