Norwich maintain grip on Cup
 Women's Football News 2 Apr 2014
Norwich City continued their fine run of form in the Norfolk Women's Cup after retaining the trophy in an entertaining 5-1 victory over Thorpe United at the FDC on Sunday afternoon.
The opening exchanges made for some good viewing, with both sides competing for every ball.
It wasn't until just before the ten minute mark that Norwich fashioned the first chance of the game. Emily Woodhouse delivered an excellent ball from the right, across the 18 yard line, which was met on the volley by Anna Larkins. Her powerful effort drew an excellent save from Thorpe keep Kirstie Andrews, who grasped the ball in mid-air.
The opportunity seemed to inject the Canaries with a greater sense of urgency and two minutes later Natasha Snelling created a shooting chance for herself just inside the box, only for her attempt to drift just the wrong side of the post.
However the deadlock was broken after 14 minutes, when Paige Shorten drifted a quickly taken free kick from 20 yards over Andrews and into the far corner of the net.
Five minutes later Norwich's Ellie Smith went on a fantastic run down the right, showing some impressive footwork and skipping past a number of Thorpe challenges, before drawing an excellent stop by the increasingly busy Andrews, who saved with her feet.
United were battling hard and fashioned a chance from nothing after 36 minutes. Captain Rebekah Lake pounced on a loose ball following some sloppy play amongst the Norwich rearguard, but fired her first time effort wide of the post, with just the keeper to beat.
Thorpe took the disappointment of that miss into the interval, but were level after 49 minutes, when Sophie Jermy's spectacular shot from 20 yards ricocheted off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
United were level for just a few minutes though, with Norwich regaining the lead on 53 minutes through Snelling, who poked past Andrews from ten yards out.
Then, ten minutes later, Larkins effectively sealed the victory for the Canaries, when she broke through the United defence and finished to make it 3-1.
Snelling came close to adding to the Canaries tally after 70 minutes, only for her looping attempt came back off the bar. However she soon scored her second and Norwich's fourth of the game, when her close range effort snuck past Andrews at the custodian's near post.
Snelling then rounded off her player of the match performance in the 85th minute, completing her hat-trick with a clever angled lob.
