Oxford intensify training
 Women's Football News 4 Apr 2014

Oxford United were put through their paces last weekend as their pre-season preparations reached a new intensity with a weekend of military training at RAF Benson.

With excitement building as United's FA Women's Super League debut draws nearer, the squad have been hard at work getting themselves ready for the opening match at home to London Bees on Monday 14th April.

This weekend a group of Oxford players spent two nights camping at RAF Benson, where they underwent rigorous military-style training. After being woken at 5am each morning, they were put through an intense session of Battle PT training before embarking on activities aimed at improving their physical fitness, teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

Flight Lieutenant Emma Phillips said: "The theme of the weekend wasn't just discipline and physical training, it was to teach the ladies effective communication, leadership and followership and the effect of positive attitude.

"It was interesting to see the group dynamic change as the weekend passed, with bonds becoming stronger and new friendships formed. Each player took a turn in leading the group through a challenging activity which gave them the confidence to speak up amongst their peers. It was fantastic to watch how the ladies became closer and more confident as the weekend went on.

"Myself and my fellow instructors thoroughly enjoyed working with Oxford United Women and can't wait to see them in action on the pitch. We wish them the best of luck and success for the season ahead."

Despite the challenges they had to face, the United players all agreed it was a useful and enjoyable opportunity which will stand them in good stead for the coming season. Captain Sahara Osborne-Ricketts said: "We had to learn to really trust in our team mates and know how to get them going. You just learn so much about yourself and your team mates and stuff that will really help us throughout the season."
