Robins rule the roost

Robins rule the roost - 10 Apr 2014 - Women's Football NewsCarshalton Athletic lifted the Surrey FA Cup with a commanding performance to beat Westfield 2-0 at Leatherhead FC.

Both clubs were contesting their first County Cup Final but it was the London & South East Regional League Division One (London) team who dominated their Premier Division opponents and could easily have recorded a larger margin of victory.

Westfield went close when a cross bounced on the top of Chanell Yardley's crossbar but Carshalton were soon creating a series ofchances at the other end. Player of the match Alison Hall was twice denied by good saves from Lauren Allen. Yardley made an important contribution by diving to turn away a Laura Hann shot on 20 minutes before Amy Robertson gave Carshalton the lead, hooking a lofted effort on the turn beyond Allen on 26 minutes.

Carshalton were quicker to the ball all over the field and created two further chances for Hall, one going just wide and the other being cleared off the line. Lizzie Laws was just wide with a long free kick for Westfield but her team may well have been grateful to only trail by a single goal at the break.

The teams returned to a similar pattern. Hall was denied by an offside flag after netting with a glancing header but Carshalton soon doubled their advantage when they again beat the defence and despite Allen twice saving well in one-on-one situations, Emily Curtis tucked away the second goal for Carshalton on the hour.

Further efforts from Curtis and Georgie O'Halloran went very close and despite an improved last half hour, Westfield could not find a way past a well drilled Carshalton defence who saw out the game well to deservedly add the County Cup to the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy they won last season.
