Charlton comeback clinches Capital Cup

Charlton comeback clinches Capital Cup - 29 Apr 2014 - Women's Football NewsCharlton Athletic lifted the inaugural Capital Women's Senior Cup with a 2-1 victory over Queen's Park Rangers at Metropolitan Police FC's Imber Court.

The showpiece match of Finals day was a keenly contested affair with a great deal of good quality play from both sides. QPR led deservedly at the break but were pegged back by a quickfire double and could not find a way back into the match in the face of a much improved Charlton display.

QPR looked the more lively side and took the lead with a close range Stacey Sowden right foot finish on 23 minutes. The Addicks had spurned a great chance to open the score when Kit Graham took advantage of slack defending to tee up Sam Pittuck but her shot was pulled wide of Megen Lynch's goal.

Player of the match Francesca Tye twice went close to levelling but it was Sowden who almost doubled the lead right on the break with a shot well saved by Lynch.

Pittuck hauled Charlton level within two minutes of the restart. Graham had an initial effort blocked but the ball ran free to the Charlton striker who found the net with the aid of a slight deflection.

Worse was to follow for QPR as Graham broke clear to fire in a powerful effort which Jo Ayre could not keep out.

QPR went close on a couple of occasions, notably from a huge scramble from a corner where four attempts on goal were blocked or saved in as many seconds but Charlton dominated the rest of the match with Emma Harrison, Pittuck, Graham and Sophie Blowers all having good efforts on goal. Pittuck was clean through on 83 minutes but shot wide of goal.

Seven minutes of added time brought no real threat from QPR as Charlton played out time comfortably to allow skipper Katie Flack to lift the Senior Cup.
