Notts County 5 (Susi 3,40, Clarke 20,76, Friend 24) Aston Villa 0
Notts County made a winning start to their Continental Cup campaign with a resounding victory over WSL2 side Aston Villa.
The Lady Pies got off to a great start after three minutes, Emily Roberts turned the Villa midfielder on the right and slid the ball down the line to Jess Clarke. The striker beat her marker and crossed for Dunia Susi who nodded past Caitlin Leach in the away team's net to give Notts the lead.
On 13 minutes, Jess Clarke broke free on the right of the box but Erin Vaughan did well to get back and block the striker's shot. Seven minutes later Clarke did double the home side's lead, Katie Hoyle slid the ball inside full back Maddy Cusack to Emily Roberts, the winger broke into the box and pulled the ball back for Clarke who sidefooted the ball into the far corner.
It was almost three, Susi playing the ball through to Caitlin Friend who took it into her stride and fired towards the top corner, Caitlin Leach reacting well to tip it over the bar. From the resulting corner, Friend got her first goal for the club. Walton took a short corner, the ball was cleared back to the midfielder who swung the ball back into the box and Friend beat her marker to the ball to volley past the goalkeeper.
Just before the half hour mark Villa almost pulled one back. The Notts defence failed to deal with a cross and Chloe Jones struck the bouncing ball on the half volley, striking the outside of the post. Friend almost doubled her tally for the club with half an hour on the clock. Jess Clarke broke down the left and her cross was chested towards the bottom corner by an onrushing Friend, the striker was ready to celebrate, only to see Leach tip the ball around the post.
It wasn't long, however, until Notts County made it four. Dunia Susi latched onto a long pass, beating Leach to the ball and rounding the keeper before moving further into the box and firing into the empty net.
As the game entered stoppage time at the end of the first half, Clarke came close to adding another, Leach doing well to block the striker's shot with her legs. This was the last action of the first half, Notts headed into the dressing room with a four-goal advantage.
Susi could have sealed her hat-trick just five minutes into the second half. The England international was sent clear of the defence, but could only find the hand of the goalkeeper as she tried to pass it into the net. On 64 minutes Susi had another chance, this time heading inches wide of the post after Clarke had picked her out with pinpoint accuracy.
Carly Telford was called into action with 15 minutes to go, Olivia Fergusson driving towards goal, only to see the England stopper beat her shot away from point blank range. It was straight up the other end for the home side to make it five. Centre back Rachel Corsie burst down the right hand side and played a ball for Clarke to race on to, the striker taking it in her stride before finishing high above the keeper.
There was time for Fergusson to come close again for the away side, but, in the last action of the match, she sent her shot wide of Telford's right hand post.
