Notts County 1 (Clarke 28) Bristol Academy 1 (Watts 54)
Notts County continued their unbeaten start to the season as the second tie of the Pies' Continental Cup campaign ended in a stalemate against Bristol Academy.
After opening the scoring on Wednesday on just three minutes, Dunia Susi looked to do the same again, breaking into the box and firing towards goal, only to see Mary Earps in the Bristol net, tip it on to the bar and away to safety.
In a tight first 20 minutes, first Katie Holtham and then Susi got in behind the Bristol defence but were unable to get a shot away before the defence recovered. Holtham was again involved on 18 minutes, as her header from a corner was cleared from under the bar by Bristol's Jemma Rose.
There was a sign of things to come on 24 minutes as Jess Clarke hit an ambitious shot from 35 yards, after spotting Earps off her line, but the ball sailed wide. The striker was a lot more accurate four minutes later, taking the ball down and turning her marker inside out before unleashing a half volley into the top corner of Earps' net.
There was a threat from Bristol with five minutes left of the first half, Rachel Corsie reacting well to clear a cross with Natalia Pablos Sanchon lurking, the Scottish international ensuring Notts went into the break in the lead.
Amy Turner did well to block Laura Del Rio's shot early in the second period, after the Spanish striker had battled through three Notts challenges. A minute later Bristol were level. Corinne Yorston and Del Rio combined well on the left, the latter breaking into the box and pulling the ball back to Nikki Watts who fired over Carly Telford in the Notts goal to level the scores with her fourth strike in two matches.
The home side reacted well to the equaliser, Susi twice breaking into the right hand side of the box and crossing dangerously across goal, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk meeting the second cross but she couldn't get her header on target.
The Lady Pies came closest to winning the game with 20 minutes left on the clock. Clarke burst in to the box on the right, firing across goal, Mary Earps spilled the shot out into her six yard box, Dunia Susi reacted quickset but her shot was blocked and Grace McCatty cleared the loose ball for a corner.
Notts County continued to press forward but couldn't create a clear opening to secure the three points with the referee sounding the final whistle soon after.
