Team Solent won the Hampshire FA Intermediate Cup with a sparkling 6-1 win over AFC Boscombe Albion at Brockenhurst FC.
The two teams are locked in a battle for the Hampshire County League Division Two title and had met two days earlier in that competition with Solent winning narrowly, but the students were in fine form in the Cup final, leading by four at the break.
Despite almost total domination, it took 22 minutes for Solent to open the score. Susie Werner tricked her way along the goal line but her cross was cleared to Ella Potter who drilled the ball beyond Ami Bojang in the Boscombe goal. The second was a brilliant piece of improvisation from Emma Pinner who returned a Bojang clearance into the goal from fully 45 yards on 25 minutes.
Werner notched the third with a powerful cross shot from 20 yards after another mazy run. Albion had their best chance just before the break but Lindsey Cowell put in a fine tackle to avert the danger. Within a minute Tasha Kenny had added a fourth goal at the other end after rounding the keeper.
Boscombe returned with renewed determination and held their own for much of the second half. However, Solent were still creating chances and it took fine saves from Bojang to deny Werner and Melanie Saunders, whilst Chelsea Law and Emma Hopkins were inches wide with fine efforts. Potter set up Pinner for a neat finish at the far post on 79 minutes, then Werner played Pinner in for her hat-trick on 88 minutes. Solent's joy was not spoiled by a late Boscombe consolation in added time, some reward for an improved second half showing.
Team Solent, the competitive team of the sports department of Solent University, are having an amazingly prolific season. Having already notched a League and Cup double by the end of March in their midweek BUCS incarnation, the Sunday side have reached three Cup Finals. Whilst Combination opposition Southampton Saints defeated them in the Southampton District FA competition, Solent still have the delayed HCWL Invitation Cup Final to play against Shanklin Reserves in two weeks time. By then, they will also know if they are League champions as well, needing three wins and an improvement of seven in their goal difference to pip Boscombe to the title.
The coaching team of Dan Payne, Chris Wheeler and Mark Savvides have prepared the squad for an incredibly congested fixture list which included playing...and winning.... three semi finals in four days in March! The dynamic and fluent football played in this final suggested that squad still have the energy to complete a busy May schedule with further honours.
