C & K Basildon recently returned from a five day trip to Malta, where they forged close ties with Maltese side Fgura United Ladies, who have just been promoted to the First Division.
The trip came about through Maltese chef Frankie Vassallo, who suggested the trip after he spoke with his niece, a young footballer in Malta, who said that she would love to play against foreign opposition.
The trip was organised with the co-operation of the Maltese Football Association and saw C & K Basildon face Malta's Under-19 team, before taking part in a triangular tournament against Fguar United and Mgarr, all of the matches taking place in the Mgarr Football Stadium.
The first match, against Malta Under-19s on the evening of 2nd May, was a very competitive match which C & K won 5-0 with goals from Amy Nash, Nicole Farmer, Jenny Brown-Wealls, Claire Lacey and Karissa Rodney. The following day, the Maltese FA expressed their thanks to C & K Basildon for the match, as they do not get many opportunities to test themselves against international opposition.
The following morning saw C & K Basildon coach, Steve Tilson, work alongside Maltese coaches at the Fgura United Stadium, which was opened in 2012 by UEFA President, Michel Platini. The coaches were selected by the Maltese FA as they coach ladies football in Malta, and Steve Tilson demonstrated a series of warm up and training drills. This was followed by a question and answer session that lasted an hour between the managerial and coaching staff of C & K Basildon and the Maltese coaches.
The final day saw C & K Basildon win the triangular tournament as they beat Fgura United 4-0 and Mgarr 5-1. At the conclusion of the tournament, C & K Basildon's Managing Director, Peter King, presented Fgura United with a brand new football kit as a token of thanks for their part in organising the tour. This was warmly received by Fgura United, as this was the first brand new kit that they had had, having previously been reliant on receiving used kits from the men's teams.
The tour was a resounding success, with Fgura United hoping to visit Basildon in 2015, to experience ladies football in Essex.
