Belles maintain leadership
 Women's Football News 18 May 2014

Doncaster Rovers Belles 2 (Bright 18, Roberts 35) Watford 0
First half goals from Millie Bright and Rhiannon Roberts maintained the Belles' 100% start to their WSL2 campaign.

Bright's free kick gave the Belles lead before Roberts powered home from a corner to keep the winning league record intact. The victory meant Gordon Staniforth's side remains top of the WSL2 table.

It was a bright start from the home side with a flurry of early corners and Sue Smith curling a shot just wide of Lauren Davey's goal. Kate Natkiel had a good opportunity to give the visitors the lead after ten minutes when a corner fell nicely for her in the box but she missed the ball completely.

Lauren Cresswell stung the hands of Davey shortly after with a free kick from range as the two sides continued to press for an opener.

The deadlock was broken after 18 minutes after Jess Sigsworth was brought down for a free kick. Bright struck it sweetly and despite looking like she kept the effort out, Davey could only fumble the ball over the line.

The goal seemed to breathe life into the Belles with Sigsworth and Reanne Thomas causing Watford problems throughout. Watford meanwhile had a number of half chances but nothing to trouble Nicola Hobbs.

Staniforth's side doubled their lead ten minutes before the break. Roberts stormed in at the back post to head home Smith's corner to give the Belles a commanding lead.

Natkiel was showing signs of resilience for the visitors, shooting just over from the edge of the box as they searched for a way back into the game.

The goal wouldn't come for Watford though and the Belles were back on track after the first 45 minutes. A great last ditch tackle from Renee Hector denied Sigsworth making it three just after the break as she looked certain to score, before Roberts saw a header fly just over. Davey did superbly well to deny Smith soon after, tipping the England international's long range effort over the bar.

Substitute Hope Knight linked up well with Sigsworth as the Belles looked to get another before a scramble led to Smtih firing straight at Davey.

The second half was becoming one of very few chances as the home side seemed content with the two-goal lead. Victoria Williams shot just over the bar after great build up play in midfield but the second half remained goalless.

The Belles now go on to Yeovil next week to see if they can keep their run going into the break.
