Brentford comeback wins trophy
 Women's Football News 19 May 2014
Brentford comeback wins trophy - 19 May 2014 - Women's Football NewsBrentford won the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Watford Development in the last match of Greater London Women's League Finals day.
Trailing for over an hour, Brentford found the target in the final quarter of an hour when two Dana Johnson goals overcame the brave resistance of the young Watford team.
Watford started by far the better and laid siege to the Brentford goal in the first fifteen minutes. Mollie Burgess had a header cleared off the line and several times the ball flew in and around the Bees area before Watford opened the scoring in the tenth minute with an excellent 25-yard shot on the turn from Kemina Webber which gave keeper Caroline Brooks no chance. Amy Radford nearly doubled the lead, then Kayleigh Humphries forced a save from Brooks with the rebound being fired over by Terri Harvey.
Brentford settled into the match from the halfway point of the first period and created a series of good chances themselves. A couple of corners started the comeback then Savannah Smith in the Watford goal was forced into a string of good saves, moving quickly off her line to foil Ashley Cheatley who then put a second chance wide when clean through. Hannah Noonan also went close from distance as Brentford finished the half strongly.
The pattern was the same on the resumption. Webber had another strong shot from distance narrowly over but the majority of the action was at the Watford end of the pitch. Smith made another good save in a goalmouth scramble and Vicky James went very close with a shot for the Bees. Humphries went close for Watford when she burst through the middle as the match passed the three quarter mark.
Cheatley seemed to have lost a great chance when a cross fell to her feet a couple of yards from goal on 75 minutes but from the clearance, Johnson was able to run into the box and drive in shot which Smith gota hand to but the ball continued into the net.
Heartened by the equaliser, Brentford continued to push forward and duly got their reward on 85 minutes. A deep corner was punched away by Smith under pressure but Johnson got a first time shot away which flew low past a crowd of players and nestled in the far corner for the winner.
Hard as Watford tried to find a way back, the Brentford defence stayed strong and Brooks was rarely troubled in the final minutes. The final whistle brought an end to a great season for Brentford WFC. Having won the GLWFL Division One title several weeks ago. they now deservedly added the scalp of a higher ranked opponent. who themselves have had a fine season in the London & South East Regional League Division One (London).
