Penzance won a thrilling Cornwall Women's League Supplementary Cup Final, beating Mullion 5-4 at Hayle FC on Sunday.
Having started slowly and found themselves 2-0 down inside fifteen minutes, they took the game to Mullion and pulled a goal back around the half hour mark as Dani Barnes delivered a great cross from the touch line and Lamorna Fellowes volleyed it in at the back post. A few minutes later it was all square with an almost identical move, although this time Fellowes score with her unfavoured right foot.
In the second half, Mullion managed to break away and score against the run of play but Penzance applied pressure on the Mullion goal and caused a defender to turn the ball into her own net.
Dani Barnes made it 4-3 with a spectacular goal, turning her marker and firing into the top corner. Katie Brewer then added the fifth with a high looping shot from the edge of the box.
But the Magpies then lost Nicki Ellis and Katie Ashworth to injury, player of the match Dani Barnes played on with a badly bruised ankle and with the side struggling to re-arrange, Mullion were given a way back into the game with their fourth goal. It was leading to a grandstand finish but Penzance held on for a 5-4 victory.
Penzance are already recruiting for next season and have a pre-season friendly booked in with Tavistock on August 25th. Anyone looking to play for the ladies team, or reformed girls' section, should call Scott on (07708) 292347.
