Team Solent finally ended their golden season with their fifth honour, comprising two league titles and three cup wins.
In a match originally scheduled for late April but postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Fareham Town FC, Team Solent lifted the Hampshire County Women's League Senior Challenge Cup after a hard fought 2-1 win over Shanklin Reserves. Two excellent goals by player of the match Suzie Werner proved the difference between the teams as Solent were pushed hard all the way to add the Cup to the League Division Two title they claimed on Sunday.
Werner and Gemma Woodford, for the Isle of Wight team, were the key players in two highly committed teams. Woodford's range of passing and powerful shooting were a constant danger to the Solent defence whilst Werner appeared all over the pitch taking players on and opening up the play with intelligent passing and movement. Solent had struck the bar and Woodford hit a rocket inches over in a goalless first half before Werner broke the deadlock on 52 minutes
Latching on to a through ball and outpacing the defence, Werner rounded keeper Paula Redden and showed great composure to beat a covering defender before shooting home left footed from 12 yards.
Shanklin had an equaliser ruled for handball when a Woodford free kick was bundled in at the far post before Werner scored from a 20-yard free kick she had won when brought down in full flight on 76 minutes.
Shanklin got a deserved consolation with literally the last kick of the match, Woodford hitting a lofted 40-yard drive past Ellie Hellyar, but team captain Lindsey Cowell and club captain Chelsea Law in her final match, were able to lift the Cup to crown an epic season for Team Solent Ladies.
