County sweep into semi finals

County sweep into semi finals - 13 Jul 2014 - Women's Football NewsYeovil Town 0 Notts County 4 (Susi 18,48, Clarke 56,61)
Notts County booked their place in the semi finals of the Continental Cup following a commanding victory over Yeovil Town at Sherborne.

England squad members Dunia Susi and Jess Clarke scored two goals apiece as the Lady Pies proved too strong for a Yeovil side which has acquitted themselves well overall in the competition this season.

The day started well for Yeovil as they paraded their new signing, Sarah Wiltshire, but they found themselves up against it with the visitors keeping possession well.

There was a blow though for County during the early stages when Sophie Bradley fell awkwardly as Yeovil attacked down the left through Laura Bray. The England defender was forced off with a knee injury and replaced by Katie Holtham, forcing a reshuffle.

Caitlin Friend also took a knock but was able to continue, bringing out a save from Beth Howard but a minute later, County were in front. Katie Hoyle lifted a pass over the Yeovil defence and into the path of Dunia Susi, who showed good composure in sliding the ball past Howard for the opening goal.

Yeovil responded with Bray firing over after battling past a challenge from Sophie Walton but County were passing the ball around with confidence and Hoyle was commanding matters in midfield. They produced a great move which contained around 20 passes and ended up with the ball in the net but Clarke's effort was ruled out by an offside flag.

Moments later, Susi broke down the right and although Howard got a hand to her low centre, Hoyle picked up the loose ball and drove goalwards but Rachael Edwards was well positioned to clear her shot off the line.

Amy Turner was next to go close with a long range effort which was turned over the bar by Howard and Holtham shot wide after exchanging passes with Hoyle. Bray had a shot saved by Carly Telford at the other end after cutting in from the left but County finished the half on top with Susi heading just wide from Desiree Scott's cross.

The pattern of the game continued at the start of the second half but this time, County were to double their lead within three minutes of the restart. Hoyle played a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Clarke whose shot forced a good save from Howard but Susi was on hand to chest the rebound into the net.

The Lady Pies were to go further ahead after winning a free kick just outside the area. Rachel Corsie floated the ball to the far post where Holtham nodded down for Clarke to turn the ball home via a post.

County continued to press forward and produced the goal of the game just after the hour mark. Corsie again instigated the move, carrying the ball out of the defence before finding Friend on the edge of the area, where she laid it back to Clarke who gave Howard no chance with a curling shot from 25 yards.

The visitors were threatening to run riot at this stage but Yeovil rallied well and battled to keep them at bay, held together by the excellent Edwards. Helen Bleazard did have a shot saved by Telford at the other end but it was County who were to go close to a fifth, Holtham retrieved the ball which had been half cleared from a corner and her chip picked out Clarke whose shot came back off the bar.

With Hoyle and Scott running matters in midfield, County kept probing until the end with Yeovil standing firm and ensuring they did not concede any further goals.

Yeovil can be pleased with their effort against high class opponents and will be stronger with the addition of their cup tied recent signings and the injured Katie Sherwood. County are getting stronger by the game and it will take a strong performance for a team to get any joy against them this season.
