Fiona pegs back Gunners
 Women's Football News 28 Jul 2014

Arsenal 1 (Stoney pen 9) Notts County (O'Sullivan 88)
Notts County claimed a point at Arsenal after a late Fiona O'Sullivan strike levelled the scores and earned them a share of the spoils.

The Gunners got off to the best possible start as Amy Turner was deemed to have tugged back Danielle Carter in the area and a penalty was awarded. Casey Stoney stepped up and sent Carly Telford the wrong way from the spot to open the scoring for the hosts.

The Lady Pies reacted well to going behind, Dunia Susi breaking into the box and stabbing a shot towards goal, Emma Byrne getting down smartly to save and goalscorer Stoney was on hand to clear.

Arsenal were good value for their early lead, with inventive duo Jordan Nobbs and Turid Knaak pulling the strings in midfield. In the 32nd minute, Nobbs' clever reverse pass set free Alex Scott but the Arsenal skipper shot tamely at Telford. Two minutes later, Stoney came close to scoring her second when she glanced over from Rachel Yankey's corner.

Rachel Corsie needed to be alert down the other end as the game approached half time, Shinobu Ohno broke free in the middle of the park and ran into the box only to be halted by a superb sliding challenge from Corsie.

The visitors were quicker out the blocks after the restart and almost levelled when Caitlin Friend beat Emma Mitchell to the ball but Stoney made a superb covering tackle to spare her team-mate's blushes. County continued to pile on the pressure with Desiree Scott blazing over and O'Sullivan seeing a low header saved by Emma Byrne.

On 65 minutes, Ohno sprung clear down the right hand side but couldn't find Carter with her cross and the ball fell to Nobbs 20 yards out but the England midfielder volleyed harmlessly wide.

Arsenal should have sealed the three points with fifteen minutes remaining. Substitute Freda Ayisi showed superb hold up play before setting free Nobbs. The midfielder composed herself but fired wide of the target.

Rick Passmoor's side threw players forward in search of an equaliser in the last five minutes and they found one when Arsenal failed to clear a long ball and O'Sullivan's snap volley flew past Byrne into the bottom corner.

Arsenal: Emma Byrne, Alex Scott, Emma Mitchell, Yukari Kinga, Casey Stoney, Niamh Fahey, Turid Knaak (sub Freda Ayisi 72mins), Jordan Nobbs, Danielle Carter, Shinobu Ohno (sub Kelly Smith 90mins), Rachel Yankey. Subs not used: Christie Murray, Caroline Weir, Vyan Sampson, Taome Oliver.
