France served notice that they are likely to be among the major contenders for the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup with a 5-1 victory over Costa Rica at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
The team which won the UEFA Under-19 Championships last year got off to a fast start with Claire Lavogez giving them a seventh minute lead from the penalty spot and Faustine Robert soon added the second via a close range tap in. The third came from an own goal by Fabiola Villalobos and Lavogez ensured that France were up at half time when she completed her brace.
Ouleymata Sarr netted another early in the second half but there were no more goals to come for the French and the final strike came from Costa Rica in injury time when Melissa Herrera grabbed a consolation.
Meanwhile New Zealand also made it winning start as they defeated Paraguay 2-0 to sit in second place in Group D. Both of their goals came in the spell leading up to half time, Emma Rolston curling home the opening goal and Steph Skilton scoring the second just before the interval.
The Group C table has been left wide open with all four teams on one point. Following England's 1-1 draw against South Korea, the other group game between Mexico and Nigeria also finished level at 1-1.
It was Mexico who opened the scoring midway through the first half when Fabiola Ibarra scored from the edge of the area. Nigeria hit back and earned themselves a share of the spoils as Osarenoma Igbinovia equalised shortly before half time.
