Sarah gives Yeovil the edge   - 11 Aug 2014 - Women's Football NewsYeovil Town 3 (Wiltshire 36,88, Curson 55) Durham Women 1 (Ness 29)
It was a day of firsts for Yeovil Town as they cemented themselves in the top half of the WSL 2 table with a 3-1 victory over Durham Women.
Sarah Wiltshire and Ellie Curson each scored their first goals for the club to give new manager Jamie Sherwood his first win in charge, but they were made to work very hard by a Durham side who performed much better than their lowly position in the table suggests.
Wiltshire almost gave her side an early lead with a strike from the edge of the area which came back off the post but Durham settled down well with Zoe Ness and Emily Scott looking strong in midfield. Ness tried her luck from 25 yards which bounced awkwardly in front of Rachel Simkin, who managed to turn the ball past the post. The resulting corner was half cleared by the Yeovil defence as far as the edge of the area, where Yasmine Hardy controlled and volleyed just wide.
Hardy went close again as she was put through by the impressive Ness but Simkin came to Yeovil's rescue by coming out to block the resulting shot with her legs. Caroline Dixon had a long range shot saved but Durham's period of pressure finally brought its reward as they took the lead just before the half hour mark.
This time it was Beth Hepple who slid a neat through ball into the path of Ness and she buried her shot inside the far post for the opening goal.
Yeovil responded well to going behind with Natalie Haigh hitting the side netting when getting on the end of a Helen Bleazard free kick.
The home side did get themselves back on level terms though, this time from a Bleazard corner which initially led to a scramble. With Durham claiming a foul, Katie Cook shot across the face of goal but Haigh did well to hook the ball back into the six yard box and Wiltshire nipped in to force the ball in from close range.
Yeovil pressed for another just before the break with a Wiltshire cross just evading Cook at the far post and Ellie Curson firing a shot inches wide following good work by Nicola Cousins. Bleazard drove a shot straight at Danielle Hill as the first half ended with the teams level.
The second half started slowly but came to life ten minutes after the restart with Yeovil scoring an excellent goal. Bleazard broke down the right and her low cross was laid off by Cook to Curson, who stepped past a challenge from Sarah Wilson before planting a left foot shot beyond Hill and into the corner of the net.
Wiltshire had a shot saved following another strong run by Bleazard but Durham continued to look dangerous on the break, the pacey Jordan Atkinson running onto a pass by Ellie Christon and cutting in from the right but her shot flew straight at Simkin.
Durham were making the home side work hard to hold on to their lead and they came within inches of grabbing an equaliser. Scott did well to shrug off the attentions of Jade Kirby in the area before crashing a shot against the angle of post and bar. Atkinson had a shot blocked and Becky Hanratty could not quite turn a volley goalwards as the visitors continued their spirited effort.
Bleazard had a shot deflected over at the other end but with two minutes left on the clock, Yeovil scored the goal which made the game safe.
With Durham committed forward, Yeovil counter attacked with Jade Radburn-Lorton's pass playing in Laura Bray. Although Victoria Linsley did well to get across to deny the striker with a good tackle, Wiltshire ran onto the loose ball and into the area where she finished clinically for her second goal.
