Northern Ireland win first friendly
 Women's Football News 28 Aug 2014

Northern Ireland were 4-2 winners over Wales in the first of two Under-17 friendly matches at Dragon Park.

On a cool, windy afternoon, the Wales girls were caught cold after just nine minutes when Irish striker Sarah Connolly tried a speculative lob from some 20 yards out that found Wales keeper, Jodie Buck well off her line and the ball sailed over her head into the net. A second came on 17 minutes when Emma McMaster beat Buck with a shot to give the visitors a comfortable lead.

Nine minutes later, Wales reduced the defect with a header from a corner by Chloe Chivers, but the fightback was short lived as Ireland grabbed a third on 37 minutes when Chloe Orr took advantage of another goalkeeping error to make it 3-1.

Wales made a change of keepers at half time, with Grace Thomas Parr replacing the unfortunate Buck. Wales then made it 3-2 thanks to another goal from Chivers, who beat Irish goalkeeper Kirsty McCaughtry with a shot from 15 yards that went past her left hand.

That was on 50 minutes, but once again, just four minutes later, Ireland restored the cushion with a second goal for Connolly, who shot from the right past the new keeper to make it 4-2.

Wales had several further chances, but none managed to beat McCaughtry. Substitutions came at regular intervals as several of the players on both sides suffered cramp and were replaced in advance of the second match at the same venue on Friday.

The score stayed at 4-2, much to the delight of Northern Ireland. Their team had looked sharper than Wales on the day and the win was very much deserved. The teams meet again on Friday at midday at the same venue.
