Sunderland pick up crucial win

Sunderland pick up crucial win - 21 Sep 2014 - Women's Football NewsYeovil Town 1 (Wiltshire 23) Sunderland 2 (Ramshaw 6, Bannon 70)
Sunderland Ladies took a step closer towards promotion from the FA Women's Super League 2 after picking up an away win at Yeovil Town.
The Lady Black Cats started brightly and on three minutes Beth Mead was denied by the reflexes of Yeovil keeper Rachel Simkin.
Three minutes later, Kiera Ramshaw gave the visitors the lead, with her third goal in as many games, when she coolly slotted home following good work from Mead.
Yeovil looked to be through on 22 minutes when Sarah Wiltshire broke free but she was denied by Steph Bannon and Sunderland keeper Rachael Laws who scrambled the ball behind for a corner. But they had their reward from the resulting set piece when Helen Bleazard's corner was headed back across goal by Katie Sherwood - playing her last match before retirement - and Wiltshire pounced for her eighth of the season.
Sunderland struggled to impose themselves on the match but eventually broke through the Yeovil defence on 70 minutes when Bannon headed home for a Victoria Greenwell corner.
However a minute later, Bleazard rattled the woodwork for the home side before Ellie Curson had a shot cleared off the line.
Yeovil pressed desperately for an equaliser and were almost caught out in the dying embers of the match when Mead dragged her shot wide for Sunderland. But in the end it didn't matter and the Lady Black Cats edged closer to the WSL 2 title.
