Durham avenge Villa defeat
 Women's Football News 6 Oct 2014
Durham Women 2 (Purfield 19, Atkinson 67) Aston Villa 0
Goals from Jemma Purfield and Jordan Atkinson sealed a 2-0 victory against Aston Villa as Durham secured their second home win of the season and avenged their defeat to Villa seven days earlier.
Purfield's goal came in first half, scoring her third goal of the season since joining the club, while Atkinson's doubled the hosts' advantage in the second half.
The first ten minutes of the game saw no real chances for either side but there was promising play from Durham. whose first real chance came 15 minutes in when Beth Hepple found space down the middle to unleash a shot that was saved by the Villa keeper.
Just four minutes later, Durham took the lead through Jemma Purfield who cut inside into the Villa box before striking her shot at the keeper. Purfield was there to poke the rebound home and give the home side the lead.
They could have easily doubled their advantage when Emily Scott latched onto a long ball forward to dink the ball over the keeper only for the ball to roll narrowly wide of the post. Zoe Ness almost found herself on the scoresheet when she played a lovely one-two with Hepple before the Scotland Under-19 international's shot was straight at Leach.
Villa didn't give up however and Danielle Hill had to be alert to their threat, getting down well to put Wilkinson's shot out for a corner.
Aston Villa came out fighting in the second half and it was Wilkinson who again went close with a free kick that went just over the bar. As Villa sent in a dangerous cross into the box, Jen Jennings rose to head the ball out as Villa looked to pull a goal back.
Atkinson kick-started Durham's response when breaking forward, getting a shot away before Villa's defence somehow managed to get the ball clear.
The Wildcats' second goal came in the 67th minute when Purfield turned provider for Jordan Atkinson who burst into the box to calmly slot the ball past Leach.
The away side threatened and both Dixon and Hill were there to deny them as Durham had to soak up a strong period of pressure.
As the game entered stoppage time it was Durham who looked for a third goal and Ness was played in by Hepple, beat the defender but was unable to get a shot away. The final whistle went and Durham bounced back from their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa to take all three points.
